How is this computed?
We run several statistical checks on each board - unusually large score jumps, suspiciously big leads over the next rank, and improbably fast score gains. A player flagged by more than one check, or across several boards, is rated higher confidence.
Packs of similarly-named accounts sitting at near-identical scores - a coordinated multi-account pattern no single-player check can see.

Beyond the per-player checks, we look for groups: families of similarly-named accounts sitting at near-identical scores - a coordinated pattern no single-player check would catch. The tighter the scores, the more accounts, and the more boards they share, the higher the confidence.
When a name disappears and a new one shows up the same hour with an identical Mastery / Power Rank fingerprint, it's almost certainly the same player under a new name. Most recent first.

Trove leaderboards have no permanent player id, so a rename is reconstructed from behavior. Between two captures taken within about 90 minutes of each other, we look for a name that vanished while a brand-new name appeared carrying the same scores on the lifetime boards - Trove Mastery, Geode Mastery and Power Rank, which never reset and carry over a rename unchanged. A match only counts when several of those boards line up and the old and new names are each other's single clear best match; anything ambiguous is left out rather than guessed. That reliance on never-resetting boards is also what keeps daily and weekly resets from ever looking like a rename.
Some names don't belong to just one player. When that happens, everything shown for that name - their chart, their ranks, their totals - is really two people's numbers mixed together. These are the names we've spotted it on.

How is this computed?
Trove's leaderboards identify players by name only - there's no permanent id behind it. So two things can go wrong, and we check for both on every capture. The first is that the game's own leaderboard lists the exact same name twice on one board, at two different ranks with two different scores. The second is that two names differing only in capitalisation get treated as one. Either way, we separate the score lines by following each one from hour to hour, and then report whether one line has stopped moving while the other keeps climbing - which is what a leftover, abandoned leaderboard entry looks like. We never claim to know which line is the "real" player, because nothing in the data can tell us that.
Captures come from an in-game scraping bot every hour. Boards reset on the same cadence Trove does (daily 11:00 UTC; weekly contests roll Mondays).
